THE MAGIC OF DUMO LULU BRIGGS
RESONATES AT THE FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE, OWERRI.
The
Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, which is usually a serene atmosphere for medical excellence, was
last week thrown into joyous celebration that got a lot of people perplexed.
And it was for good reason; the management of the centre decided in its wisdom
to organize a reception to honour its outgoing chairman Chief. Barr. Dumo Lulu
Briggs.
Very
early that morning as patients and workers arrived for another busy day,
colourful banners were seen all over the centre informing the public that a
great and jolly good fellow was exiting the centre and they were sad to see him
go. Member of the outgoing board also attended the send off party. The Medical Director Dr. Angela Uwakwem in her speech
showered encomiums on Barr. Dumo Lulu Briggs and thanked him on behalf of the
management and staff for his contributions and support during his tenure that
contributed in no small measure to the growth and expansion of the Federal
Medical Centre, Owerri.
The
joy and passion with which she spoke was only testimony that Barr. Dumo Lulu
Briggs who is described as a bridge builder and grassroot mobilizer had again
wrought his magic there for the upliftment of humanity. Dumo, ever modest spoke
about his tenure as chairman
“
It was another opportunity to add my quota to national development, but
this time in the health section.
The experience was wonderful, very challenging , it was an eye
opener. I had a great team - we had very experienced technocrats and
professionals on the board, people like M. Ibrahim Shettima, Usman
Ibba, Engr. Don Chibundu Njoku, and Senator (Engr) Onyema Amadi
Okoroafor. With all modesty we left the place better than we met it
and I believe posterity will judge us positively someday’’.

You
are reputed to have transformed the National Maritime Academy, Oron,
during
your tenure as chairman. Tell us about the experience
‘’ We
knew when we came on board that we had a serious job to do. We
knew we had to make a mark before we leave this Academy. What we have
looked at is to see how we can move the Academy from where it is today
to a world-class Academy. First of all, we thought we could have the
Academy as the best maritime academy in Africa within the first two
years and then make it one of the leading academies internationally
within the next five years. Accordingly we asked the Rector to work on
a programme of activities for the Academy between now and the next
five years, structured in two phases.

Our
vision was to ensure that the students that we had there are one of the best
you can find anywhere in the world, well equipped and well trained and
can be gainfully employed by international maritime companies. That’s
the minimum of what we planned to achieve and we did’’.

Asked
Why he thought he was chosen for both assignments, Dumo said ,
‘’They
think that it’s a job that I would be able to deliver. Also it
must have been borne out of my well known enthusiasm and interest in
anything that relates to education and human capital development …they
must have thought that well, this is somebody who has over time
spoken so much about this…it would be nice to see if it is not just
talk; now that we have the opportunity, let’s see if he will be able
to deliver. So, it’s not lost on me that the expectation is high . I
take all of these assignments with all amount of seriousness and
dedication. Sometimes they conflict in terms of timing with my
businesses which are growing daily, but because this is national
service I create the time and balance to ensure I give my best always.
Nigeria, I have always believed can only truly be great when we all
add our own quota to its development when called upon to do so. So, I
cannot fall short of their expectations of me, God has always been
helping and guiding me’’.

Dumo’s
next shot is the governorship of the oil rich Rivers state, he is an aspirant
under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP where he says his ambition is to liberate
the people of Rivers state from the pangs of poverty that is prevalent in over
60 percent of the citizens despite its rich natural resources...for the people of Rivers State, destiny beckons.

CHIEF. BARR. DUMO LULU
BRIGGS PREACHES POLITICS WITHOUT BITTERNESS
In Rivers
state right now, the stakes over who becomes Governor is pretty high, apologies
to Baba, it’s a fight to finish; missiles are flying across the political space
as aspirants seek more relevance and plot to gain more ground. But one aspirant
is towing a different path. Chief. Barr. Dumo Lulu Briggs says for him, it has
always been politics without bitterness.
He told
reporters,
’I am all
for developmental politics and not
personal abusive politics. I am too polished for that. We all, despite our
ambitions are brothers, we have always lived as brothers and attended each
others’ social events, we must not therefore allow politics to divide us.
Rivers State is very small and we will always meet after now’’.
Barr Dumo Lulu Briggs in an interactive
session with society reporters where he unveiled his Binding Engagement with
Rivers people, his manifesto for governance said,
”My
administration shall not only be judged by the provision of fundamentals
like
Roads, Housing, Portable drinking water, and electricity but by quantity and
quality
of our students, the quantity and quality of jobs created, the quantity of
Rivers
people who own quality businesses, the quantity of Rivers people who own quality
homes, the quantity of rural areas opened up for sustainable development, the
quantity and quality of our health care delivery, the quantity of functional industrialized
cities, the security of lives and property and drastic reduction in crime and
of course, the provision of world class infrastructure.
Indeed”.
Dumo says he will want to be judged by the
number of Rivers people who have moved from poverty to prosperity and into
greater prosperity.
Dumo is
the son of the highly respected kalabari High Chief, businessman and
politician, Chief O.B. Lulu Briggs who was National Vice Chairman South South
of the defunct National Party of Nigeria , NPN.
Dumo lulu
Briggs is just rounding up his stint as Chairman of the board of the Federal
Medical Centre, Owerri
We will
all be watching.

2015 GUBER ELECTIONS IN RIVERS STATE
PRESIDENT JONATHAN IS INTERESTED IN WHAT HAPPENS IN RIVERS STATE. HE IS OUR BROTHER.
-
CHIEF
BARR DUMO LULU BRIGGS
Chief
Barr. Dumo Lulu Briggs is one of the
front runner Guber aspirants in the PDP in Rivers state. He was among the 16
riverine aspirants that called on the party’s national exco to cancel the ward congresses conducted by the
party two weeks ago which was boycotted by the other aspirants due to perceived
irregularities in the preparations . He spoke to political reporters following
the cancellation of the ward congresses and other issues in the state
“ I must
congratulate the national exco of our great party, the PDP, for having the
boldness to do the right thing. It took a lot of courage but then, i have
always known that our party, the PDP, will do the right thing. PDP has a great
internal democracy mechanism that has always helped us to resolve issues; that
is the strength of our party.
From the
onset the majority of Rivers people were against the ward congresses because we
felt a lot of things had not been put in place and it was therefore like
putting the cart before the horse to have a ward congress when a party register
was not in place. But certain persons felt they had the powers to go ahead
despite our protest and today, the congresses have been cancelled. Thos e ward
congresses were a sham.
And also
don’t forget the President though he does not make public pronouncements on
such issues is our brother. Rivers State is very dear to him and he will always
want the best for the state. Therefore i know he will resist anything that will
derail his support base in the state”.
