NIGERIA MARKS OLYMPIC DAY WITH 6.5 KM RUN
Saturday, July 2, the world marked the 2016 Olympic Day and Nigerians living in the Federal Capital Territory marked the day with a 6.5km run in Abuja. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, led the run from the Old Parade Ground through Area 3 to 10.
After
the run, certificates were presented by the President, Nigeria Olympics
Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, to the Chief of Army Staff, the Minister of
Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung (who
was represented by Hawa Akinyemi, Director, Federation of Elite Athletes
Development (FEAD) in the ministry) as well as to the FCT Minister,
Alhaji Muhammad Bello (who was represented by Dilichukwu Onyedima,
Director of Sports in the Federal Capital Territory).The Olympic Day was initiated in 1987 by the International Olympic Committee to commemorate the founding of the Olympic Movement. It was part of the international Olympic Movement’s activity to promote mass participation in sports and was organized by the Nigeria Olympic Committee
